Dr. Carmela White completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia. Her research interests have primarily included the use and effectiveness of positive psychology and well-being interventions and examining weight management strategies. Clinically, in addition to having experience working with mental health concerns and stressors (i.e., adjustment, anxiety, depression, trauma, mood fluctuations), she also has experience working with individuals with health concerns (i.e., injury, chronic pain, weight management) and the accompanying stressors (i.e., adjustment, grief and loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, shame, guilt, social isolation, low confidence and self-esteem, poor sleep, and challenges with implementing behavioural changes). Dr. White utilizes a biopsychosocial model of assessment and treatment, which emphasizes learning about and conceptualizing several individual and social factors that contribute to one’s distress and well-being as part of treatment planning.
She helps individuals identify their strengths to facilitate healing and meet their goals. Further, being trained as a scientist-clinical practitioner, she relies on evidence-based and best-practice strategies supported by scientific research while incorporating an eclectic and flexible approach to meet clients’ individual needs. Her therapeutic approach involves creating an ongoing safe, warm, and empathic space for clients to feel heard and respected, and importantly, to be part of their own treatment plans. She works collaboratively with clients to develop and modify treatment goals and direction to not only decrease distress, but also to foster and increase resilience, healthy coping, well-being, and overall quality of life.
She truly believes all individuals want to live a life of well-being and meaning and strive for continuous growth and achievement. Unfortunately, life can throw both expected and unexpected curve balls that can throw us off our track of wellness, and ultimately, away from what we most value in life. Whether you are experiencing mental and/or physical health struggles and wishing for greater understanding, coping, and growth, together, you can work to refocus on what matters to you individually and move and attune yourself back into balance and a sense of peace and wellness.
