Pilates and Rehabilitation

Pilates is a system of exercises designed to create strength without adding bulk.  It increases flexibility, balance and the mind-body connection.  Every movement is based upon drawing from the body’s core.  The original concepts are founded on the work of Joseph Pilates, who brought it to New York from Germany in 1923.

The complete method is designed to train the body through controlled and correct patterns of functional movement using the body’s full range of motion.  You use either resistance or assistance from weighted springs, with specialized equipment or you can utilize your own body weight using only a mat. Pilates pays a great deal of attention to overall spine health, the core and good posture.

Pilates has been shown to improve:

  • Muscle imbalance and impingement
  • Neck and back pain
  • Persistent pain, tension and fibromyalgia management
  • Recovery from knee, hip, back and other surgeries
  • Sports Injuries and Repetitive Strain
  • Sciatica, Stenosis, Scoliosis and other spine issues
  • Hyper/Hypo Mobility
  • Foot, ankle, knee alignment correction
  • Pre-and Postnatal conditions
  • Restoring health and vitality to post treatment cancer survivors
  • Diminishment of guarding and halting overly-recruited muscles
  • Re-education and restoring function following neurological impairments such as stoke, Parkinson's and MS

During a Pilates session, you will also receive:

  • Homework programs for Posture Correction, Core Education, Stretching and Stability Ball
  • Self Myofascial Release (SMR) for Myofascial Restrictions

Pilates has been evolving for more than ninety years.  Over the decades, Pilates principles, exercises and equipment have been changing with current research and developments.  All over the world today, Pilates shows its great diversity as it is incorporated into Physiotherapy clinics, fitness centres and many professional athletes and dancers' training programs.
