What Types of Treatments/Interventions Does a Physiotherapist with Momentum Health Use?

Exercises - Range of Motion (ROM)
Exercise prescription is the #1 most important tool for injury recovery or prevention. We'll use simple software to keep you on track with the right exercises for your condition. Mobility and Range of Motion is often a starting point.

Strengthening
Ever wondered why you can lift something heavy with minimal pain, but just sleeping on your side hurts your neck? This is a really simplified example, but our physiotherapists will work with you to identify which muscles are inhibited, tight, weak, or a combination of it all. Targeted exercises support you in your goals to return to your original performance level or highest possible function. There will be homework for you!

Soft Tissue Mobilization
Soft tissue mobilization or therapeutic massage may be a part of your physiotherapy treatment to release tight muscles, relieve pain and reduce swelling.

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) and Functional Dry Needling (FDN) Physiotherapists

If you've had it, you know why this is so popular. Overall, needling seeks to promote a twitch response in a targeted muscle, which prompts a neurological and tissue release. The symtpom relief from needling is often very immediate and impactful. Read a blog post here or you could download a brochure on IMS.

Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation is used in some instances to target a stronger twitch response. A current is passed through a short section of the muscle to target just that one area.

Shockwave Therapy
A technology that introduces intense, short energy waves travelling faster than sound into the body to create a healing cascade, the promotion of tissue healing, breakdown of calcification and tissue adhesions, decrease of pain and increase of function. Shockwave is especially beneficial for the following conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis (with or without heel spur)
  • Tendonitis (Achilles, patella)
  • Lateral Epicondylitis
  • Rotator cuff tendonopathy (with or without calcification)
  • Connective tissue pain
  • Lateral Hip pain
  • IT band syndrome
  • Chronic neck and back pain

Cold therapy is effective in minimizing pain and swelling, especially in acute injuries. Applying heat can help improve your blood flow especially at the site of injury, thus, speeding up healing. In addition, it can help soften tight tissues and relieves pain. We'll apply either or both if appropriate (or if you'd like to finish your session with it!), but our main focus is certainly going to be on active rehabilitation and facilitating your healing.

TENS
TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a type of electrical stimulation. It is a small battery-powered device that sends low current through the electrodes place on the skin surface. A TENS device does not cause the muscles to contract, but rather helps temporarily relieve pain.
