Pilates and Rehabilitation Pilates is a system of exercises designed to create strength without adding bulk. It increases flexibility, balance and the mind-body connection. Every movement is based upon drawing from the body’s core. The original concepts are founded on the work of Joseph Pilates, who brought it to New York from Germany in 1923. The complete method is designed to train the body through controlled and correct patterns of functional movement using the body’s full range of motion. You use either resistance or assistance from weighted springs, with specialized equipment or you can utilize your own body weight using only a mat. Pilates pays a great deal of attention to overall spine health, the core and good posture.
