With Evidence Sport and Spine South now open in Seton, we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce our wonderful Clinic Director and Physiotherapist, Sunny Chhokar.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Sunny Chhokar, I’m originally from Moose Jaw, SK. I proceeded to go to school at the University of Saskatchewan where I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Masters of Physiotherapy. I moved to Calgary in 2011 to work as a physiotherapist for a few years before life took me to Brisbane, Australia, where I obtained my Masters in Musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Upon arriving back to Calgary I accepted a job at Evidence Sport and Spine South.
Describe your business.
We are a multidisciplinary clinic that includes advanced physiotherapy practice (including women’s health, concussion/vestibular, sport and spine), massage therapy as well as physicians who specialize with regenerative therapies (prolotherapy, PRP injections).
What made you decide to open this clinic?
The model of Evidence and the patient-centered care made Evidence Sport and Spine North one of the most recognized physiotherapy practices in Calgary. When I first moved to Calgary, Evidence was known to employ some of the best musculoskeletal physios and physicians in the city. Upon working there, it was amazing to see all the great work and collaboration that took place within the clinic. When I was offered the opportunity to grow the Evidence Model, I believed it would be fantastic to expand the services to a wider range of people within Calgary and surrounding communities.
What makes Evidence Sport and Spine South different?
On the physiotherapy side of things, all clinicians must have advanced training (typically, years of training following graduating physiotherapy school). In addition, clinicians are trained on how to best utilize our physicians who provide regenerative therapies and the radiologists who provide image-guided interventions. We spend hours shadowing and working with other musculoskeletal health care professionals (Physiatrists, Sport MD’s, Nurse Practitioner’s, Radiologists) to understand how to best apply their services. This allows our physios to understand when a patient requires conservative care or injection therapy to provide improved outcomes. We take pride in not only helping physicians with patients, but consulting on cases for community physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists on patients who may have hit a plateau in treatment or require a screening for injections. We really enjoy working with other healthcare professionals collaboratively to improve patient care.
What can patients expect?
Patients can expect one-on-one care at all appointments. In addition, all of our assessments are one hour and provide a thorough examination and include a report that can be relayed to any other healthcare professional involved in the care of the patient. We strive to provide the most evidence-based practice available and take pride in adapting treatment when necessary. Patients can expect to be heard and listened to in the process of their care.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
When I see people who have had injuries that are affecting their life get better. There is nothing better than hearing patients getting back to the things they love doing without limitation and pain. We really try to make it a laid-back atmosphere, while still providing exceptional care. The people of Calgary have been good to me and I am excited to help out in the new and exciting community of Seton and the surrounding areas.
Do you have any exciting plans for the future that you want patients to know about?
The plan of our clinic is to expand and develop a strong team that would be a ‘musculoskeletal center’ of the South. I would want patients to know, by coming to the clinic, their condition will have the best available care possible. Personally, I intend on continuing with my postgraduate training to develop into one of the best physiotherapists within our city. With the great support of the people involved with Momentum health and Evidence Sport and Spine, I have high expectations for the development of myself as a professional, as well as the new practice in Seton.
